You Won’t Believe What Ahsoka Is Teaching Sabine in Her New Series

Ahsoka has always been a maverick. She never followed the rules, whether by annoying Anakin with her spirited attitude or by leaving the Jedi Order that trained her.

With her new series Ahsoka coming out in a week, fans are eager to see how she will shake up Star Wars as we know it, and the answer may involve destroying one of the core pillars of the franchise.

To hype up Ahsoka, Disney has released several feature that use footage from Star Wars’ history to highlight the steps the new series is taking.

At first, this just mixed up dialogue from previous movies and shows, but as more teasers came out, clues started to point to a clear reveal. The first teaser showed different pairs of masters and apprentices, from Obi-Wan and Anakin to Luke and Rey.

Among them were Ahsoka and Sabine Wren, which makes some sense, as we know Sabine will use her Darksaber skills to handle Ezra Bridger’s old lightsaber.

But the contrast with the other pairs suggests that Sabine is learning to be a Jedi, which shouldn’t be possible since Sabine has no connection to the Force. More proof kept accumulating.

Executive producer Dave Filoni said in a featurette I’m telling this story about this mentor-learner relationship that goes from Anakin to Ahsoka to Sabine. It’s quite amazing to bring this to life.”

Another clip shows Sabine wearing the blindfold helmet Luke used in his first Jedi lessons, while another shows Ahsoka saying, “When the stakes are this high, it takes a master and an apprentice,” over shots of her and Sabine.

The final piece of proof is very convincing. In the official trailer, Sabine says, “You never made things easy for me, Master.” In the teaser featuring Dave Filoni, we see Ahsoka saying, “There is nothing easy about being a Jedi” in the same scene.

Could that be Ahsoka’s reply to Sabine’s remark, essentially confirming Sabine is training to be a Jedi? There are only two ways Sabine could be training to be a Jedi.

Either Sabine is now Force-sensitive, changing what we know about her from Rebels, or Ahsoka is teaching her even though she doesn’t have the Force. Neither is a simple solution, but they seem like the only options for explaining this increasingly obvious plot twist.

Will Ahsoka change everything we know about Sabine, or change one of the first rules of Star Wars and make anyone eligible to be a Jedi?

Or is Ahsoka defying again by redefining what being a Jedi means? There’s no clear, canon-friendly answer, but we’ll find out which one is true in just a few days.

Ahsoka premieres August 23, 2023 on Disney+.
